As I flip back through the pages of my journal, I had a
difficult time thinking of projects I could possibly form out of this cacophony
of thoughts and feelings. Here are the three ideas I came up with:
Proposal 1: Song (music)
Proposal 2: Spoken word piece or poem (performance-based)
Proposal 3: a large scale painting (36” x 48”)
Last week, we were asked to write down then things that make
us happy. My list consisted of general things like “family/home” “new
experiences” “friends” but there were other items that truly define who I am
and my happiness. “Music” is a huge part of my life. There isn’t a day that I
don’t listen to it. “Work/productivity” is important to my happiness because it
gives me a sense of accomplishment and worth, otherwise I’m bored and useless.
“Creating” was the last on the list, but it isn’t the least. I love to create
whether it’s writing, playing guitar, painting, drawing…etc. Ever since high
school I have been interested in all forms of art. I would paint in my
free-time, I would draw when I wasn’t paying attention in class, and I’d go to
art shows. Looking at art-pieces that I have created act like a journal. I
remember what medium was used, where I was, and why I chose this subject.
My first proposal is writing a song. It wouldn’t be my first
song, but it would be a new experience using my journal and my own feelings,
observations, thoughts. It would be interesting how I could transform this
clusterfuck into something coherent and fluid. My second proposal was a spoken
word piece. I have always been fascinated by this form of poetry. The emotion
that is required to perform is remarkable and something I have always wanted to
recreate. My third proposal is a large scale painting possibly 3’ x 4’.
Returning to my passion of creating art would be refreshing and rewarding. I
was thinking of focusing on a handful of pages of my journal and create a
series of paintings or one symbolic piece.

This is such a cool idea, I totally get the difficulty in looking for valuable material in a jumble of word vomit…May I suggest doing something like…
ReplyDelete1. Take the first and last lines of each journal entry OR
2. Pick your favorite number and every (5th, 7th, 12th, etc) word - use that word?
Just an idea…
I think a song would be really cool. Maybe if you reread your journal and write down patterns or common words you can figure out a meaningful chorus from that.
ReplyDeleteDude awesome idea I wish I was musically inclined I am stoked to hear it. I think that idea is better than the poem idea for sure, however depending on your comfort level the painting could be epic too. GL!
ReplyDeleteI think it would be cool to write a song! I think to me it sounds like you are more passionate about that one as well as more challenged by it. I don’t know which one you really are leaning towards but it’s a good idea I think to go with the one that challenges you the most and also the one that allows you to be the most transparent. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteAll are great ideas, but I like the idea of a spoken word piece or poem because those are more free-form and a song kind of needs some organization. Marissa's idea is cool to choose every few words so people get an idea of what you might have been journaling.
ReplyDeleteKono,
ReplyDeleteI’m glad you’re using this JTP as a chance to get artsy. I’d be interested in any 3 of them, and I like how you’re going “big” with the 3x4-foot painting. (If you want to lower the stakes/expectations, you could do a series of 3 smaller ones, based off of moments/observations/things in your journal.) Supplementing this with a small art-musesum-style blurb about “what your artistic intentions are with this piece” would be really neat, unless you’re against using language to explain art (some people are vehemently against that).
If you were doing a spoken word piece, where would you do it? In front of our class? In a greater Antioch forum/spot? Would you record it?

Kono - My journal is DEFINITELY a "clusterfuck" as well, so brainstorming was also difficult for me. With that said, I have to put my vote on the writing of a song. Whatever you choose - I think they are all great ideas. I really look forward to your piece. :)
ReplyDeleteKono ,
ReplyDeleteHey I think the song sounds like a great idea,
Great ideas! I dig the music / song one a bunch. It's a tried and true method of creating awesome songs (from what I've read – what do I know?). I also love the painting idea. Something about taking the words from a small private journal and then enlarging them and sharing them appeals to me.
ReplyDeletethis is my problem as well! my journal is a little all over the place! I'm having trouble in figuring it out. i like the painting idea! i think that sounds easiest since you have such a scattered random journal. paintings are allowed to be a little crazy.
